GOLDEN WEDDING

MR. AND MRS. W. COWIE

To celebrate the golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. William Cowie, of Deyonport, a reception was given by their many relatives at the home of Mrs. Edmund Bell. Epsom Avenue, to-day. .The arrival at the reception was carried out in picturesque style, the motor car being gaily decorated with gold streamers. The wedding cake was iced in pale gold and ornamented with golden trimmings. Mr. Cowie was born in Auckland. His parents arrived here in the early days and -settled in Parnell. In his early twenties Mr. Cowie took up his -residence in Mercury Bay and became a successful farmer. It was there he met his wife, then Mary White, who is the daughtei of the late Bennett White, an Englishman, trained for the profession ot medicine, who towards the end of the 'forties or last century, he embarked on a voyage to New Zealand. He eventually . married a chieftainess of the Ngatiawa tribe. The outbreak of the Hauhau fanaticism brought tragic events in its train, and one of the first of these tragedies "vas the raiding of the cutter Kate.. These incidents had a further tragic sequel in July, 1867, when he was murdered by a party of natives on the road between Opotiki and Ohiwa. It was believed that this act was in revenge for the execution of the cutter Kate murderers

Mr. and Mrs. Cowie have' three children living. Two sons were killed in the Great War. There are six grandchildren.
