OPERATED ON BANK BOOK
"It is my first offence, and I am very sorry for it," was the plea of a Maori, Willie Aorangi (24) when he appeared before Mr. Justice Callan for sentence on three charges of forgery and uttering. The offence, said his Honer, was that when boarded out of the Army sick, Aorangi went to live with a sister-in-law, at Tauranga, and there got hold of a sayinjs bank book of a nephew, on which he operated. He took the full amount of the deposit However, it was his first offence, and the local probation officer's report was favourable to probation. The prisoner would be allowed probation for two years, with a condition that in instalments of 10/ a week he pay £20, of which £15 2/5 was to go to th 2 youth whose bank book was operated on, and the remainder to pay the State for expenses incurred.
