RUGBY BENEFIT GAME
PLAYERS FROM SERVICES SEQUEL TO NAVAL ACTION Players who have distinguished themselves in Rugby football in the Services in and beyond the Auckland Province will be included in the side to meet the Navy in a special charity fixture which has ■been arranged to take place at Eden Park next Saturday. In the preliminary selection men who have been playing for Auckland have not been selected, the idea being to give others an opportunity. Included in the team will be J. Smith, the brilliant three-quarter, and G. Hook, fullback, both of whom played in the NorthSouth Island game. There are also representative?; from Maori units. The Navy team produced some good talent last Saturday, when it was rather unlucky to lose to Wellington. The match is being played as a benefit for dependents of naval ratings killed in a recent action, and practical interest in monetary donations were announced at the meeting of the Auckland Rugby Union last night. The teams will be selected from the following:— Army Team.—R. Jones, W. Gussey, R. Bilkey, R. Johnstone, A. Arblaster, P. Crowley, G. Ramsbottom, A. Jacobs, E. Reid, I. Trotter, N. Inder, A. Bean, R. Nicholson, J. McLean, D. Barchard, Q. Hook, J. Smith, B. Davis, C. Cowley, N. Carter, B. Harrison. All tire above players will assemble at the Ponsonby football shed this evening. Navy Team.. —Nolan (captain), BellBooth, Sellers, Firth, Hayes. Rile.v, Webb, Waldegrave, Russell, Rogers, Barry, Molloy, Marshall, Parsonage. Smith (vice-captain). Reserves: Vcrrall, McKay, Hampton, Fltmmer, Great-head. The cur-tain-raiser at 1.30 p.m. will be played for the Pollard Cup between the winners of A and B sections of the second division championship.
The Manukau iilth grade team was declared the winner of tire PPter Mackie trophy competition, with a record of 339.68 points. Training College third grade team was second with 337.32 and Grammar third grade was third with 334.8 points. Otahuhu was declared the winner of the third grade championship. Marist Club won the Southland Shield with 90 per cent. Otahuhu was second with 85 per cent, and Grammar third with 74.24 per cent. Votes of condolence with the relatives of FlightSergeant R. V. Griffiths (Manukau), gazetted killed in action, also with Mr. C. Guiney and Mr. J. Dick in their recent bereavements, were passed. Mr. J. Taylor was appointed manager of the Auckland representative team to play Wellington at Wellington.
