BOAT SERVICES
TO WAIHEKE ISLAND
AN INQUIRY TO BE HELD
In accordance with a direction from the Minister of Transport, Mr. O'Brien, the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr. E. J. Phelan, will hold a special inquiry into boat services to Waiheke Island, and a public meeting will take place at Surfdale on Tuesday next in the afternoon. If necessary, a further sitting will be held in Auckland.
The Minister has taken action as the result of a petition from Waiheke residents regarding the boat services.
Under the Transport Licensing Amendment Act, the Minister may appoint any other person to make such inquiries as he thinks necessary or expedient, for the purpose of securing the .improvement, coordination, development and better control of facilities for improvement of transport. It is estirfiated that the island has, at times, a population of up to 2000 people. There are a large number of permanent residents, and many others go there at week-ends and holiday periods.
