BIGAMY INCREASING

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The fact that the serious crime of bigamy was on the increase was commented upon by Mr. Justice Smith in- • the Supreme Court- -to-day. •»He said that the Counts, .in the. public interest, must make a-stand against it and show that the way of the transgressor who committed bigamy was hard. Two men who had committed bigamy were sentenced to 18 and 15 months' reformative detention respectively. The first, James Kelly, aged 29, was married in England in 1936 and committed bigamy in Wellington on-November 10,-1942. The other prisoner was Evenor Joseph Leon Guy Charles Desmerais, aged 30, ship's carpenter. He was married at Kaiapoi in December, 1941, and married bigamously n July 8, 1942.
