LOW VEGETABLE PRICES Most classes of vegetables were in heavy supply and sold at low rates at the city markets to-day. This applied particularly to cabbage, cauliflower, kumara3, parsnips. ' carrots and pumpkins. The first of the new season's asparagus" appeared and sold up to 3/ a bunch. There was a good demand for few local hothouse tomatoes and local sweet oranges, treo tomatoes and passion fruit. Prices were:— Vegetables.—Asparagus. 1/6 to 3/ bundle. Beet, 3/ to 6/6 case. Celery: Cooking, 1/ to 2/ bundle; dessert, 2/6 to 6/. Carrots. 2/ to 7/6 bag. Cauliflowers, 2/ to 8/6 sack. Cabbages, 3/ to 8/ sack; spring. 12/ to 20/ cwt. KumAras. 5/ to 9/ bag; Tauranga, 3/ to 5/ bag. Leeks, 3d to 9d bundle. Lettuce. 4/ to 20/ case. Marrows, 5/6 to 7/6 sack. Onions, 18/ to 24/3 bag. Potatoes; Southern, 13/4 Vi to 13/10 y 2 cwt; Oliakune, 14/6; New, 3d to lb. Pumpkins. Choice Crown, 12/ to 18/ cwt; Triumblc. 6/ to 12/ sack: mixed and unsound. 1/6 to M sack. Parsnips, 2/ to 7/ bag. Radish, 1/ to 3/ dcz. ■ Rhubarb, 7/ to 14/ doz. Spinach. 7/ to 11/ case. Spring onions, 9d to 2/6 bundle. Swedes, 3/ to 4/6 bag. Turnips, 1/6 to 2/6 bag. Brussels sprouts, 6d to 1/3 lb. Fruit. —Tomatoes: Hothouse, 2/ to 5/ lb. Oranges: Local, sweet, bushel case, 25/ to 35/; Navels, 40/ to 70/. Tree tomatoes: New Black. 21/ to 30/ case; Yellow, 18/ to 27/. Grapefruit: New Zealand, 12/ to 18/ case; small, 6/ to 9/. Passion fruit, 28/ to 38/ case. -Poultry.—The supply was medium and the demand was fair. The prices piid remained the same. Selling- rates were:—Cockerels: Heavy breeds, prime, 12/ to 15/ each; not prime, 7/6 to 10/6. Light breeds: Prime, 8/6 t0.12/6: not prime, 6/. Hens:-Hcavy~ breeds, 9/ to 11/; light breeds, 4/6 to .7/. Laying hens: Light breeds, 5/ to 10/. Pullets: Heavy breeds, best, • 10/ to 12/; smaller, 5/ up. Light breeds: Best, 8/6 to 10/; smaller, 5/ up. Drakes: .Young, prime, 7/ to 8/. Ducks: Young, 6/ to 10/: old, 4/ to s''6. Geese, 5/ to 6/. Turkey hens, 10/ to 12/; gobblers, 15/ to "20/. Cockerel chicks: Heavy breeds, 2d; light breeds, Id. Eggs, Button Cut Flowers.—Eggs: Standard hen, 1/8»2 dozen; duck, 1/B*2. Farmers' butter: 1/3 to I/HV2 lb. Cut flowers: A large quantity of flowers was offering, with a good demand for most lines. Daffodils brought very high prices.
