DEATH' OF OWNER The death is reported In Australia of Mr. A. D. Playfajr, who bought Ribbonwood at 1000 guineas shortly after the famous son of Wildwood arrived in Australia. Ribbonwood became one of _ the most successful stallions ever identified with light-harness racing. FAULTLESS DISPLAY Fantom was inclined to pace when lie went out for the Four-Year-Old Trotting Stakes, but .in the race he did r.ot put a foot wrong, and won- comfortably. The only other to .give .a faultless display was Rerewaka, which finished fourth, though Believe Me made only.one slight, mistake. Fantom is not a handsome "gelding, but he looks a bargain at the 700gs Mr. J. R. HcKenzie paid for. him. THEORY CONFOUNDED At one time races equivalent to weight-for-age and set weight events were anathema to Addington programme committees, who claimed that 'they "were unprofitable and induced poor betting. That theory was. unsportsmanlike as- well as commercially unfounded. The pool on the August . Free-for-AU last Saturday topped £IG,OOO. Admittedly the race was last on the programme, but £3 3,135 was invested on the Four-Year-Old Trotting Stakes, third cn the card, and on the three-year-old race £14,661 went through, compared with £14,806 on the National Handicap.
