A CLERK'S SERVICES
IS WORK ESSENTIAL?
APPEAL, BOAKI) COMMENT A conflict of opinion regarding the essential nature of the work of a clerk employed by the Public Works Department was revealed at a sitting of the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board this morning. An appeal by the Department was supported by Mr. J. Stack, chief clerk of the Auckland office, who said that the reservist was clerk to an engineer engaged solely on war work, but the Public Service appeals advisory committee recommended that the appeal be dismissed. Mr. T. P. McCready, a member of the board, said the local man had a better idea of the nature of a man's work than a tribunal in Wellington, but Mr. A. M. Samuel, also a member of the board, thought it would be foolish to disregard the opinion of the tribunal and accept the evidence of a junior officer. The chairman, Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M.. said that, without referring to the present appeal, a reservist's immediate superior might go against an advisory committee s decision and lodge an appeal on purely personal grounds. These were facts which had to be taken into consideration in a conflict of opinion. , , , .. The board deemed to reserve its decision and, in the meantime, refer the matter back to the advisory committee. , , , , .. Eighty-nine other appeals by the Department were adjourned sine die, with the exception of one which was adjourned for a report.
