MANY VACANCIES
HIGH PRIORITY JOBS
TRANSFERS ESSENTIAL
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. "At present there are 8000 vacancies in this country in work of the highest priority," said Mr. N. 3. Woods, of the National Service Department, in addressing the New Zealand Vocational Guidance Association.
He said these could be overcome only by transfers from non-essential to essential industries, and from lower to higher priorities- This might involve decisions which, from the viewpoint of vocational guidance officers, would appear severe, but this was essential. A number of young people appeared to have been enticed away from school prematurely bv wartime wage enticements, and others have been enticed into ill-advised jobs. However, the number of young people who actually had been adversely affected vocationally solely as a result of the war, was probably much exaggerated. It was not large in relation to the 150,000 persons between-14 and 20 years in New Zealand.
