SOUTH ISLAND PROGRESS

TRAINS BEFORE CHRISTMAS

(0.C.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day

The northern head of the South Island Main "Trunk railway is now only five miles out of Kaikoura, 125 miles north of Platelaying has been completed across the Hapuku River bridge, and the workmen now have a straight run into the town itself. . ...

While the railhead is expected to be in Kaikoura within the next six or seven weeks, it will be some time before the yards are ready for reception of traffic, but the previous estimate of having passenger trains running into Kaikoura before Christmas will be met easily.

The contract for the Kaikoura railway station has been let, and it-Is anticipated that the building will be complete in about three months. The station will possess several striking features. The roof 'will' be of green concrete tiles.

Provision has been made for an imposing entrance vestibule with the booking office on one side and the ticket office on the other. The station will be on the seaward side of the track and will command an imposing view of the coast.
