BOGUS ORGANISER
"Rest Centre" Arranged In New South Wales Town
HOAXER IN AMERICAN DRESS Rec. 10 a.m. SYDNEY, this day. An amazing hoax has been disclosed by the failure of more than 300 American nurses and soldiers to arrive at a northern New South Wales country centre.
A man dressed in the uniform of a United States Army mastersergeant represented himself as the organiser of a scheme to establish a rest centre for American troops from battle areas. Preparations to receive them were made by public bodies, business houses and private citizens.
Buses were booked to take the Americans to pleasure resorts. Hotels bought extra bedding and guests were refused rooms reserved for the mythical army. The "organiser" then stated a senior officer would arrive to complete arrangements. He failed to do so. So tai as can be ascertained, the noaxei, who disappeared, did ™t aefraun anvone of cash, being cont&ot to win. a large measure of notoiiety. JA
