WHANGAREI DEBATE

FISH-CLEAMXG FACTORY (O C.) WHANGAREI, this day. After a lengthy discussion the Whangarei Borough Council last night revoked, by six votes to four, its previous decision declining Auckland applications for a license to establish fish-cleaning works at Whangarei town wharf. Opponents of the application contended that the refuse discharge would endanger health and be a nuisance in the basin, which is much frequented by swimmers in the summer months, and that most of the fish would be taken to Auckland. The majority of the councillors said that adequate safeguards are taken by the Health Department, and that securing an adequate fish supply for the town was the first consideration. / The license is only for the duration of the war, after which it is expected the: works will shift to Port Whangarei, three miles from the town.
