MORALITY

It is amazing how those contribut ing remarks to the above subject seem unable to deal with the funda mental facts of the whole situation While war certainly does make for a loosening of our so-called "moral ity" it is only an intensification of the normal state of affairs. Anyone who is aware of the true state of affairs in any community in this country knows quite well that our sex ethics are more honoured in the breach than in the observance by a very large section of our people. Of course this is not admitted omcially and anyone who attempts to bring it out is far from popular, but all of' us who are in touch with the every, day life of the people will admit that my statement is more of a softening of the truth than otherwise. Moreover those who have some knowledge of history know that we will compare favourably with the past in observance of the moral code The fact is that the moral code has never been faithfully observed except by a small minority and society has wisely winked at the breaches of that code. How anyone can expect a code formulated In a long past age, by those quite unqualified to guide others in such matters, to suit the needs and wishes of the modern age is a mystery. What is essential is frank 'recognition of facts and human needs'" in the light of modern scientific knowledge and a code in harmony therewith E.W.F.
