VALUE OF APPLES

SOURCE OF VITAMIN HIGH CONTEXT DISCLOSED (P.A.) NELSON, Tuesday. Apples, particularly of the Stunner variety, are proved to contain high value "in vitamin C, according to tests carried out recently at the Cawthron Institute. Sir Theodore Rigg, director of the institute, stated that recent work in the biochemical department had thrown new light on the value of apples as a source of vitamin C. The Sturmer variety, he said, was found to contain unexpected high values in the vitamin, exceeding that commonly found in tomatoes. The work now being carried out on the vitamin C content of different varieties of apples was likely to have an important bearing on the consumer demand for the different varieties, and should have a beneficial effect on the industry, both in Nelson and in other parts of New Zealand.
