18-YEAR-OLD FARMER
jSTRENGTH FOR TASK DEBATED Whether an 18-year-old boy I unaided could run a 50-acre farm I with 40 cows, also calves and pigs, j was debated before the chairman. Mr. J. O. Liddell, at a sitting of the AuckI land Industrial Manpower Committee yesterday. Mr. J. H. Flay was appealing against the refusal of the i manpower officer to allow his son to ! terminate his employment with Hawthorne and Munro, butchers. Mr. j Flay said he was in the air force. for which he had volunteered when ballotted for the army. His son was I needed at home to help his twin brother run the farm. The work j was too much for one 18-year-old ' boy. he considered. Mr. Liddell said that from his t knowledge of other anneals, the size !of the farm was not beyond the ! capabilities of one young man. On behalf of the employers. Mr. | Munro said he could not spare Flay, j as it was impossible to replace him. i From long experience of farms he | declared that one man could manage j a farm of the size described..
