WINTER RACING
TAKANINI TOPICS
PROGRESS OF THE DOZER
After a short rest following his injury while racing at Awapuni, The Dozer- is again being exercised. It was a pity that the Valette gelding was forced to miss the Wellington and Riccarton fixtures, but hopes are entertained that he will be able to compete in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup next month at Ellerslie. He is being qualified at the hunts with this objective in view. Track conditions at Takanini are to some extent hindering the progress of candidates being prepared for spring meetings, but nevertheless when the campaign commences it is expected that the district will have excellent representation. H. E. Gray has decided against continuing with Minko, and the Ringmaster filly is to be retired to the matrons' paddock, with a visit to Mediaeval Knight as' her first mating. j Apprentice V. Wood, formerly attached to P. E. Pope's stable, has relinquished his apprenticeship and has returned to a civil ocupation. Wood, who won the Mitchelson Cup on Lovaals and Matamata Cup on Lady Pay, put on weight considerably, and was two stone heavier than when lie commenced riding at the start of the season. Representative is the latest to rejoin the active workers, and he looks well after his respite. Inconsistent last season, he may prove stronger and better in the new term, when he would only have to reproduce his best to hold his own in any company. A Likely Novice Spirallum has furnished considerably since last racing, and is a three-year-old who may well earn distinction in the new season. Raced very little this year, he has impressed by his long striding smooth action, and to all appearances will make good. The brilliant filly Sweet Biscuit has; caused her trainer some concern, and, , owing to lameness, has been attended by veterinary advice. It would appear that she is responding to treatment so well that the Broieforte filly will soon be over her trouble and ready to line up with the best of her age in the spring. Her full-sister, Broieform, is creating a good impression and promises to be an early winner. A rising two-year-old which is creating much interest in Takanini is the chestnut son of' Coronach —Snowfleld, which brought a high price at the last yearling sales. Opinions of critics are divided, and while some admit his potentialities, most are guarded on. account of the fact that he is so big and may take a lot of making. The Hazrat gelding Hazroy continues to please by his progress, and is now being selected as one likely to show his ability early. A member of J. H. Wallace's stable, he looks likely to do the stable good service. Kittyora has returned to work under this trainer's guidance, and as she promised well a few months ago, will benefit by her respite, and may be seen to early advantage. Very Fit Mare Lovaals is bright and well and ready for her next task. This will probably be the Jellicoe Handicap at the Pakuranga meeting. It is doubtful whether the Vaals mare ever looked better than at present, and R. Miller should again have her saluting the judge at one of the remaining winter fixtures. The same trainer is handling a nice type of rising three-year-old named Pasario by St. Boswells—Hilton Grange, and this gelding is also in line for honours. Stated to be an excellent jumper, a black gelding by British King, undergoing his preparation by H. E. Gray, Is causing some attention. Taken to the hunts, he has given some dashing displays, and m due course may be expected to shape well in his class. Indian Princess and Sir Bian, which are at the moment spelling, are expected back in training in a couple of weeks. They have done well during their bpeil and will resume in sufficient time to be got ready for spring racing. No fault can be found with the condition of Brief, which takes the eye as one with a good future. Brief need generously last season without winning, and as he has furnished eunsiderabiy. his three-year-old career is awaited with interest. He is again a member of E. Pope's team. Merrv May Is again In work after a spell. 'The Tidal filly was greatly admired for some sterling performances last season, and has only to go mong the right way in the interim to be numbered among the handicap winners in the new season.
