AIRCRAFT PRODUCTION
WANGANUI, Thursday.
Paying tribute to the manufacturing capacity and skill of British aircraft production, now the largest industry in Great Britain, the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, Sir Harry Batterbee, said at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Wanganui to-day that the Lancaster was probably the finest heavy bomber in the world.
More than 1,000,000 people were employed in the aircraft industry of Great Britain, and of these 30 per cent were women, who, equally with the men, had been working a 52hour week for many long months, said Sir Harry. The normal working week for women engaged in British industries was 48 to 52 hours.
Sir Harry said it was now possible to give some figures regarding aircraft production. There was reason to think that Britain reached parity with Germany in the spring of 1942. It had been estimated that, at the time of the Battle of Britain, German preponderance was about three cr four to one.
