KICK-OFF ON SATURDAY NEXT Referees appointed for the opening series of matches next Satuiday in the Auckland Rugby Football Union s senior championship are:— First division. —Army v. Manukau, Eden Park No 1 'I P.m W. W. Allen; Garrison v. Technical, Eden Park No. 1, 1.30 p.m., K. D. Croft; Navy v. M.T.P., Eden Park No. 3, 3 p.m., -S. G. Yeoman; Grafton- Ponsonby v. Marist, Eden Park No. 2, 3 p.m.. M. G. Parris. Second division. —A section: Eden v. Otahuhu, Sturges Park, 3 p.m., K. A. Preston; Grammar v. Kittyhawks, Eden Park No. 2, 1.30 p.m., R. T. McGregor; Air Force No. 1 and Training College, byes. b! Section: University v. Suburbs, Eden Park No. 3, 1.30 p.m.. V. Mace; Takapuna V. Army No. 2, Takapuna No. 1, 3 p.m.. A. V. Styles; District School v. Air Force No. 2, GribbleHirst Park, 3 p.m., S. Exier. It will be noticed that of the 20 teams entered eight have been allocated to the first division. These include M.T.P., last year's winner" of the Oallaher Shield, pithough it was beaten in both of the preliminary round series played this season on May 1 and 8. for grading purposes. (The winners were Technical, 27—11, and Garrison, B—s. The remaining 14 teams have been classified in two sections ol the second division. After the first round has been completed there will be promotion and relegation, and later the leaders of the A and B sections will play off for the second division championship. It will be recalled that in 1940 Takapuna (promoted from the second division after the first round) won the Gallaher Shield by defeating Marist. (1939 champion) in the final, 13—8.
