BRIGHT BOXING
ALL AMATEUR PROGRAMME INTER-SERVICE RIVALRY Generously supported by competitors from various units of the fighting forces of the Allied Nations, as well as from locals gymnasiums, the opening tournament of the Auckland Boxing Association staged in the Newmarket Municipal Hall last night, had a patronage that overtaxed the accommodation. The doors had to be closed half an hour before the advertised time of starting the bouts, and many scores of would-be patrons were turned away. Their one consolation-.was an announcement that the cream of the talent disclosed last night would be matched in a fortnight's time in a larger building, probably the Town Hall, to save a second disappointment to those desiring to see the services in action. The density of the crowd within the hall created discomfort for a considerable section of the spectators and inconvenience for the officials. These discomforts, however, were forgotten, in toe fhrills and° enthusiasm evoked by the bouts. Partisanship ran high as bout f«J rtl ": Pi*-<;pri vnrvlne decrees of talent, most 01 it o I good standard and practically every match characterised by a spirited determination to give nnd take which is a feature of service boxing. Army n™ marine and air force representatives as well as civilian boxers, provided plenty of action-packed bouts which kept the partisanship at fever heat throughout the full programme of 15 bouts, which held the crowd m attendance to the end. It was a busy night for referees F.Brlen and Jeff Stone.
