CITY MARKETS QUIET

NEW PRICES OPERATING WILIi SUPPLIES DECREASE? Sales of fruit and vegetables were conducted at the city markets to-day under the new price order, details of which were published on Saturdav. Supplies, however, were fairly slack at most of the marts, and it was difficult to judge the effects of the new rates on supply and demand. *So far as bidding was concerned, as soon as the maximum fixed price was reached it was applied, and in lines where demand was keenest auctioneers could only introduce a form of rationing such as has obtained since the first price order was introduced last August. No apples had been received from the Internal Marketing Division this morning, so if was impossible to ascertain the state of this section »f the market.

There appears to be a consensus of opinion among wholesalers that the new prices of certain vegetables will discourage growers and result in shorter supplies to the markets.
