CONSERVATION OF ELECTRIC POWER CONSERVATION OF ELECTRIC POWER THE AUCKLAND ELECTRIC POWER BOARD Has been advised by the Electricity Controller that the consumption of electricity in the North Island must be limited to within the capacity of the Government's Generating Plants. Auckland is required to reduce its consumption by 300,000 units per week, and this can be done without undue inconvenience IF ALL CONSUMERS WILL REDUCE THEIR CONSUMPTION BY 1 0 PER CENT. The position is so acute that failure to reduce consumption voluntarily will necessitate total disconnection of areas from time to time as required by the Government to regulate the loading. SUGGESTED METHODS OF REDUCING CONSUMPTION: LIGHTING.—Switch out lights not actually required. RADIO. Use Radio to listen to programmes, not as a background to routine duties. ELECTRIC COOKING. Use oven cooking in preference to hotplates; as the oven is heavily insulated it is more economical than the hotplates. Use kettles or jugs to boil water, they use electricity more efficiently. RADIATORS. Only use Radiators when necessary, they use a tremendous amount of electricity. NO RADIATORS ARE ALLOWED TO BE USED IN BUSINESS PREMISES, SHOPS. FACTORIES, HALLS, THEATRES, ETC., BETWEEN 4 P.M. AND 6 P.M. ELECTRIC WATER HEATERS.—Switch off heater as much as possible. Never run off hot water to avoid boiling of heater switch off. Never use running hot water to wash plates or dishes. ELECTRIC MOTORS AND POWER APPLIANCES.—AII power users are asked to give particular attention to switching off their motors or plant when not actually performing useful work. It is easy to switch electrical energy on or off. SHOP AND BUSINESS LIGHTING. Switch off all daylight lighting unless its retention is absolutely essential. All advertising and display lighting should be discontinued. AUCKLAND ELECTRIC POWER BOARD R. H. BARTLEY, M.1.E.E., M.1.M.E., General Manager.
