AUSTRALIA AND CHINA

VITAL BASES TO BEAT JAPS Reed. 2.30 p.m. SYDNEY, this day. Australia and China were the two most vital bases from which to beat Japan, said Madame Chiang Kai-shek, in a radio talk to Australa from New York. She added that Australia was the most important sea base, while China was the most important land base.

"I hope the day is not far distant when Australian and Chinese soldiers will fight on a common front," she said. "To win the war is a great task, but winning the war is only half the battle. Peace in the Pacific depends largely on China and Australia as well as America. There must be a strong China and a strong Australia, as well as a strong America."
