YOUNG MAORI'S OFFENCE

ATTITUDE OF PARENTS When pleading for a Maori, Tati Ripaki, 21, who appeared for sentence on a charge of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under 16 years, Mr. Chalmers expressed the opinion in the Supreme Court to-day that the law in respect of this class of oft'ence should be amended to differentiate between Europeans and Maoris. In some British colonies there were special laws with reference to natives. Maori girls developed physically much sooner than European girls, and in the present case tne association of the youth and the girl was allowed by the parents. Counsel urged that probation be granted.

Mr. Justice Callan said there was no doubt in his mind that the girl, who was aged 14 years and five months, was the instigating party. She had said to the prisoner, "I want you for my man," and brought him to the knowledge of the parents and local elders. Prisoner would be admitted to probation until June 22, 1944, when the girl would be 16 years of age, a condition being that he kept apart from the girl until that date.
