DESERTED HIS SHIP

SEAMAN SENT TO PRISON "These desertions are becoming too prevalent," said a representative of the Shaw Savill and Albion Company, Limited, when Richard Maguire appeared before Mr. J. Morling, S.M., in the Police Court this morning, and pleaded guilty to deserting his ship. Maguire, it was stated, signed on in the United Kingdom for the round trip, and deserted in Wellington. Work was being carried out night and day on ships for their quick dispatch, but they were being held up for replacements owing to crew shortages. Stating that he was prepared to go on any ship, Maguire added that he had been torpedoed five times and was not afraid of being torpedoed again. A sentence of one month's imprisonment was imposed, an order being made that he be placed on the first ship going overseas.
