HIKURANGI DISTRICT CONTROLLER'S PROPOSAL (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. To discuss the latest developments in connection with the provision of a doctor at Hikurangi, the Kamo and Hikurangi miners, who have been idle since Monday morning, when it was decided, and later ratified by a full meeting, to cease work as a protest against no doctor being m attendance at Hikurangi, will hold a further rrfeeting this afternoon. It is understood the meeting has been called to consider a telegram from the Mines Controller, Mr. Binney. to the effect that a doctor stationed in a district army camp will be made available to deal with any urgent cases among miners, while for other cases Dr. Armstrong, who recently left Hikurangi for Whangarei, and precipitated the action by the miners, will be in attendance in the town on three, evenings weekly, as he had previously arranged. It is understood that the Government has in mind a doctor for Hikurangi. The miners' council has held a meeting to discuss developments, and it is believed they will place before the men at the meeting to-day a recommendation to return to work it certain conditions, yet to be disclosed, are complied with. A representative of the Whangarei Hospital Board is to attend the meeting and it is believed that, on- behalf of the board, he will assure the miners that, while there is a prospect of a doctor being stationed in Hikurangi, the doctor's residence will not be removed.
