AWATEA'S PERSONNEL
AWARDS TO THE CREW (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. Awards to the commander, officers and crew of the liner Awatea were promulgated in the London Gazette on March 13, according to advice received by the head office of the Union Steamship Company. The awards are:—
To Captain C. B. Morgan, D.S.O. (Captain Morgan had already been awarded the D.S.C.); Mr. W. A. McGarry, chief officer, Mr. H. Simmonds, chief engineer, Mr. W. S. Muir, senior third officer, the D.S.C. To Mr. G. H. Gee, greaser, and Mr. A. Ingham, oilburner, the D.S.M.
Mr. J. C. Willis, second engineer, Mr. B. M. Hurley, purser, Mr. S. Emerson, A.8., Mr. G. H. Cooper, chief steward, Mr. W. Allan, chef., Mr. D. J. Green and Mr. P. J. F. Harris, first grade stewards, and Mr. J. W. Griffin, are all mentioned in dispatches.
Captain Morgan, whose home is in Christchurch, was born in New Zealand in 1886, and entered the company's service in 1909. He served in the Great War in the R.N.R., and was awarded the D.S.C.
Chief Officer McGarry, whose home is in Wellington, was born in New Zealand in 1901. He joined the company in 1922. He has been in most of the company's ships during the last eight years.
Chief Engineer Simmonds, whose home is in the South Island, was born in New Zealand in 1897. He joined the company in 1920. « Third Officer Muir, whose home is in Auckland, is a South African by birth, and he joined the company in 1938. ,
