MAORI SOCIAL LIFE
METHODIST CENTRE OPENED
In the presence of a large crowd, Princess Te Puea Herangi declared the Maori Social Centre in Airedale Street, Auckland, officially opened on Saturday. The building has been constructed under the auspices of the Methodist Maori Mission to provide recreational and other facilities for Maori workers, and generally to cater for the welfare of Maori youth in the city.
The meeting was presided over by the Rev. E. T. Olds, who, in welcoming the visitors, expressed the hope that the establishment of a social and religious centre would help to bring together Maoris and pakehas in the life of the community. There were also present the Rev. Eruera Te Tuhi, senior Maori superintendent, the Rev. G. I. Laurenson, general superintendent, the Mayor, Mr. J A C. Allum, and Mr. Maharaia Wimata, on behalf of the Hon. P K Paikea.
