REID MEMORIAL

SURPRISE BY MIGHTY

A brilliant burst of speed in the home stretch carried Josette to easy victory in the R. T. Reid Memorial Handicap at the combined meeting of the Waikato, Thames and Cambridge Clubs at Te Rapa to-day. She was a not favourite and her numerous supporters could not have been feeling pleased as the field entered the last quarter. Josette was then running seventh and in a difficult position. Once the straight was entered Max. Stewart pulled the David McElwyn mare to the outside and she made the opposition look very cheap over the last 50 yards. Belfast Jack made practically all the running and he was still going strongly in front at the home turn, but he had very little to spare from April Direct and True Guide, which were then pushing' him to the utmost. In the punishing finish between this trio True Guide did the best to take second place by a head from Belfast Jack, April Direct being a neck further back. Belfast Jack piloted the field early, Kewpie's Queen, April Direct, True Guide, Shrewdie, Peter's Find, Phalario, and Josette following in that order, with little between them. There was no change along the back, but as the runners swept across the top April Direct and True Guide moved up as Peter's Find and Shrewdie weakened and ICatene, which had made up a good deal of ground, dropped back. The leaders were hard at it half way down the running, and it was there that Josette launched her challenge to win very easily by a couple of lengths. April Direct was fourth, and then came Shrewdie and Peter's Find. Smart Performance The three-year-old filly, Forewarned, was made a very solid oddson favourite, both ways, for the Introductory Trot, and she was responsible for a smart performance to win. Although actually the first to commence, Forewarned failed to strike a proper gait and as.the field left the straight she was in thirteenth position about 16 lengths behind the leader, Kaipaki Bill. The latter then went out with a ten lengths lead from Silver Plane, Otawa Lass, Peter Abbey and Vice Regal. . With half a mile to go Kaipaki Bill was two lengths clear of Vice Regal with Twice Worthy almost level, while Forewarned and Win Thru commenced to run through from the ruck. Forewarned had the measure of Kaipaki Bill as they entered the home stretch and she had sufficient in reserve to withstand a determined challenge by the outsider, Win Thru. Kaipaki Bill got third place owing to Vice Regal breaking badly under pressure in the last furlong. Vice Regal was fourth; and then came Silver Plane and Otawa Lass. The well-backed Etta Girl broke up badly at the start and took no other part in the race. F. J. Smith Again F. J. Smith completed a winning double when he won the Frankton Handicap with Volo Senwood, another each-way, favourite. Like the first winner, Volo Senwood won after meeting with difficulties early. These occurred when Peter Pointer fell just after the start], interfering with a number of horses, including the favourite. However, the Lusty Volo gelding showed a lot of pace in the middle stages, to be handy to the leaders with- a quarter to go. He was in front before the home turn was reached, and won as he liked by four lengths from Albert Tracey. Our Gail broke up at the start and lost a lot of ground, Flashlight leading out from Albert Tracey, Modern Jewel, Biddy Girl and Gay Spark. Flashlight soon lost his position, and Albert Tracey entered the back stretch with a nice lead. He was still in front crossing the top, out Volo Senwood then put paid to his account to win as described. Sumana finished on strongly to take third place ahead of Modern Jewel, Our Gail and Balalaika. Won By a Head In an exciting finish, Mighty got up in the last stride to win the Thames Handicap from Hargood's Pride. The Great Bingen gelding was running in a handy position for most of the way, but was pocketed just before entering the home stretch and Bryce, junior, did not extricate him until about half a furlong from the judge. Mighty, then finished with rare determination to win by a head. Master Lawn, the win favourite, was slow away, but he was handy to the leaders commencing the last quarter. However, the effort was too much for Him and he weakened badly in the straight. Lord Axworthy, Press Gang, Escobar and Hargood's Pride were prominent in the initial stages, but Charles Rex went fast to lead along the back stretch from Press Gang, Hargood's Pride, Certify, Mighty and Auto Lad. Hargood's Pride was in command crossing the top, from Certify, while Master Lawn, Bill Scott, Auto Lad and Mighty rapidly improved their positions. Hargood's Pride appeared to have the race won 50 yards from the judge, but Mighty came home just a shade too well for him. Certify stayed on well to take third place just clear of Auto Lad and Bill Scott, almost in line. INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP (Trotters) of £200 One mile and a half. Limit 3.49.
