RATS IN AVIARY

CHAMPION BIRDS KILLED FIFTY-TWO FINCHES LOST Burrowing through the concrete floor of the aviary of Mr. Geo. Metcalfe, Great South Road, this week, rats caused havoc to the birds and killed 52. The birds, British and foreign finches, were the result of years of importing and cross-breeding by Mr. Metcalf, and among those killed were all the champions of the Grand National Show held in Christchurch last year.

Some of the finches were valued as high as £6 each, and the loss to Mr. Metcalf is a serious one, more particularly as it is now impossible to import birds from overseas.
