OBITUARY
MR. JOHN STRATHERN A former well-known detective in the Auckland police force, Mr. John Strathern, has died in Auckland at the age of 94. Born in Scotland, Mr. Strathern came to New Zealand as a young man. On his arrival in the colony he joined the Public Works Department and later the police force. After seven years of service, during which time he ! gained a high reputation as a detec- ■ tive, he resigned and opened a fruit : business. He served for 20 years as ■ an officer of the Charitable Aid Board. Later, Mr. Strathern spent a short time farming in Matamata. He retired to live in Auckland shortly after the Great War. MR. NORMAN J. INGIJS The death at Rotorua yesterday of Mr. Norman John Inglis removes one of the best known launch owners in Auckland. He lived at Devonport until a year ago, when he went to Rotorua for health reasons. Mr. Inglis was owner and master of the passenger launches Olivene, Olive Jean and Olive Rose, which he built himself and used regularly in the pre-war trade to Rangitoto and other island resorts, the "Olive" boats and their- genial owner being -popular with the public. In his younger days he was a keen yachtsman, and came of a boating family. One of his fastest boats was the 16-footer Atangatai, in which he won many prizes, including a famous match with the 16-footer Sceptre. He was an early member of the North Shore Yacht Club, and won this clubs championship several years in succession. He competed in most of the Auckland clubs' races, and on one occasion, in the Victoria Clubs race to Motutapu, in which boats up to 30ft took part, when he got away to a good start with spinnaker drawing well, he sailed Atangatai home ahead of a big fleet. Mr. Inglis is survived by his wife. ;
