MARRIED IN LONDON
New Zealand Hero Of Graf Spee Battle SPLENDID NAVAL, CAREER N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 2 p.m. LONDON, Mar. 29. Lieutenant-Commander R. E. Washbourn, D.5.0., R.N., of Golden Bay, Nelson, who was decorated for gallantry in the Achilles during the action against the Graf Spee, married Miss June Medwin Herapath, of Guildford, England, at St. Mary Abbot's, Kensington, on Saturday. Lieutenant-Commander Washbourn entered the Royal Navy in 1928. He won the Goodenough Medal for gunnery and the Robert Megaw Memorial Prize for 1932-33, which is awarded every year to the sublieutenant obtaining the highest place in the examinations for! lieutenant. In 1937 he won {he Commander' Egerton Memorial Prize awarded for gunnery to the lieutenant passing best in the examination in practical gunnery. His citation stated that he set a magnificent example in the Battle of the River Plate. Though hit in the head by a shell splinter, he continued to control the main armament with the utmost coolness.
