VEGETABLES PLENTIFUL

Aided by recent showers vegetables came forward in good supply at the city markets to-day and prices were generally steady at late rates. Carrots of lower quality were easier. Marrows, peas and beans met with a steady demand, realising mostly late - values. Lettuce was in oversupply with prices cheap. Onions were plentiful and pumpkins cheaper. Cabbage, cauliflower and peas were forward from Ohakune. Tomatoes were cheap and plentiful. High rates ruled lor peaches, plums and nectarines. Passion were slightly easier and good supplies of mushrooms sold freely. Prices were:— Fruit.—Apples: Cookers, various, 9/ case, dessert, various, 13/6. Tomatoes: Outdoor, smooth, 3/ to 8/, few special 9/ case; crinkled, 2/ to 6/ case. Bananas: Original, ripe, 30/ case. Peaches: Dessert, 25/ to 40/ per 3-tray, 15/ to 20/6 case; Paragon, 18/ to 20/ case. Plums: Dessert, 13/ to 18/ case; cooking, 9/ to 12/; Doris, 12/ to 17/; Greengage, 16/. Grapes: Jlothouse, Black Hamburg. 1/8 to 3/1 lb. Passion fruit: 12/ to 17/. Nectarines: 16/ to 28/6 case, 3-tray crates 30/ to 45/6'. Strawberries: Captain Cook, extra choice, 2/5 to 5/ chip, others, jam, 1/6 to 2/. Raspberries: 14/ to 15/ tin. Poultry.—The supply of poultry was heavy and the demand keen. Prices remained unchanged:—Cockerels: Heavy breeds, prime, 7/ to 9/ each; not prime. 5/ to 7/; light breeds, prime, 6/ to 7/; not prime. 3/6 to 5/6. Fat hens: Heavy breeds, 6/ to 7/6; light breeds, 4/ to 5/. Laying hens: Heavy breeds, 7/ to 8/; light breeds, 5/ to 6/. Pullets: " Heavy breeds, best, 12/ to 15/; smaller, 5/ upwards; light breeds, best, 9/ to 11/; smaller, 3/6 to 5/;. Drakes: Young, prime, 4/ to 5/; smaller, 2/ upwards. Ducks: Young, 6/ to 8/; old, 3/ to 4/. Geese: 5/ to 7/. Turkey hens: 7/6 to 12/. Gobblers: 15/ to 25/. Eggs and Flowers. Eggs.—Standard grade hen, standard duck, 2/o^2. Cut Flowers.. —The supply of flowers showed a marked increase. Demand was good and prices were very fair.
