HOOKS ON BAYONETS
Wounded men of the United States forces recently evacuated from the Solomons fighting zone to an American hospital in the Wellington province have little fresh to tell of land fighting on Guadalcanal-, though they all say that the conditions under which fighting is going on in the jungle are very onerous. The Japanese do not relish cold steel, according to one man who was in the front line foi' 57 days. "They just can't take it," he states. "They have a curious hook on some of their bayonets, however, with which they try to nook our rifles from our hands." This, the man added, did not seem to work with much success. The enemy camouflage work was very good, the same man stated. The leaf capes they Wear, originally developed, it is believed, as raincoats, but now worn as camouflage, make them very difficult to distinguish in the jungle verdure.
