OBITUARY

MR. A. P. SMITH The death 'has occurred of Mr. Arthur Purvis Smith, of 60, Seaview Road, Remuera, a representative of the Pukeatua riding on the Waitemata County Council. Mr. Smith, who was born in County Mayo, Ireland, was brought to New Zealand by his parents when five years old. He was educated at The Terrace School, Wellington, and joined the Department of Agriculture at Hawera about 45 years ago. After being stationed at various country centres he transferred to the Lands and Survey Department just after the last war. He played a prominent part in the organisation of the soldiers' settlement scheme, being in charge of the area which extended from Mercer to North Cape. He was also chairman of one of the small farms boards. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, one daughter and two sons. There are five grandchildren.
