NATHAN'S MEMORIAL

VOLIFOX'S BIG DIVIDEND

The Great Northern Derby impressions, one of which was that Lord Chancellor should not - have been beaten, was borne out in the Nathans' Memorial, chief handicap event, at the conclusion of the Auckland Racing Club's holiday carnival this afternoon. On this occasion the Mr Standfast three-year-old colt was in front most of the way (also at the right end) but he ran wide at the turn and appeared to be a beaten horse at the half distance. . It was at this stage that he proved himself the good colt he is by coming on to -win decisively by half a length from Te Kawiti. What is more, in recording 2.3 2-5 for the mile and a quarter he ran a record for the course. Landveyor ran on strongly to take third position just a shade ahead of Phaleron.

The stablernates, Lord Chancellor and Cambria, went out fast from the barrier to set a hot pace from Balblair and Phaleron, but this quartet had little leeway on Corot and Landveyor and Foxlore in the back stretch. Lord Chancellor had it on Cambria crossing the top, where Te Kawiti moved up on the rails to oust Balblair from third place, and he was followed almost immediately; by Landveyor. Entering the home: stretch less than a length separated Te Kawiti, on the rails, Phaleron, a little wider out; Landveyor and Lord Chancellor. Te Kawiti was in front at the half distance, but Lord Chancellor, vigorously ridden by Holland, wore him down with every stride, and won convincingly by half a length. Landveyor was a fair third, and then came Phaleron, Cornish, Cambria, Balblair and Corot.

Goodwood Handicap The Foxbridge mare Volifox created a profound surprise in the Goodwood Handicap by running away from the opposition over the last 50yds to pay a dividend.getting on for £40. She was a long way back in the early stages, and even at the -home turn was only eighth, but she then came through in the middle of the track to score, going away, by two lengths from Justina, which also finished on fast. Tutere was very solidly backed to win, and when he was in the lead at the home turn after being in a prominent position all the way his victory was proclaimed, but he shut up badly over the final furlong, and was only eighth at the judge. After Aguilo, Bronze Moth, Kraal and Tutere had made the pace for the first quarter

Tellsome went out with a lead of .three lengths across the top from Bronze Moth and Tutere; which were hotly pursued: by Bronzo and Kraal. Tellsom had had enough as the home Stretch was entered, • and the field then bunched, leaving Volifox to win as she liked, while Justina just cut Aguilo out of second place. • Representative was running on in fourth position, and then came Vaalsmoss, Bronzo, Travancore and Tutere.

Favourite Wins Form earlier at the meeting worked out in the Auckland Hurdles as Hunto, which was exceptionally unlucky to be beaten on New Year's Day, Jed practically all the way to-day. On this occasion he gave a fast and clean exhibition of jumping in contrast to his display the other; day, and he was untroubled to win easing up by two lengths in the smart time of 3.10. Quite early in the race Cuisinier took him on for pace and when opposite the. stand Cuisinier was showing a. shade in front, but shortly afterwards Hunto outjumped him and Student Prince' moved up from a rear position to follow Hunto, Cuisinier, and Gold Spot across the top. Student Prince challenged Hunto just after the last fence was crossed, but even under pressure had ho chance of overhauling the leader, while .Cuisinier struggled on into third place ahead 2? }ou Gold Spot, with Hot Shot and Ginno next.

Subadar Again r^ h %A ner of m 3 s y lvia Handicap, Subadar, was .backed down to a very short price and the support was fully justified. He was drawn wide out at;the barrier and there were half a dozen horses in front of & i,T h ! n , &%? urned for h °me, put. he finished with great courage when asked to respond. Stepping and Lord; Luck showed the way o°^ n ? t^- h0 5 ae turn from Colostrip and Laddie Boy and were followed by Yorkshire with Subadar further back. The leaders tired half wav down the straight and Subadar had to be ridden hard to get the verdict. Gaymeer, having his second race came home in great style to get third money a length and a half behind Yorkish and return a price over a quarter of a century for a place. Yorkish put up his best effort to date. Sweet Biscuit, Colostrip, and Chatmoney followed the placed horses. • Results:—
