CHAMPION FAILS

THE BOWLS TOURNEY

A. P. NEIL CANNOT QUALIFY

When the Auckland Centre's rinks championship tourney was resumed this morning, A. P. Neil's Hillsboro four, which won last year, had already failed to qualify. With three games to be played before post-section contests, there was already one team with six wins, that of 1. &■ Hickson (Remuera). Neil had then only two victories. Peculiarly enough, Hick son lost to J. S. Anchors Hamilton side and Hillsboro was five points up on Mount Eden (H. Gribble). W C. Franks, 1935 Auckland and 1909 New Zealand champion skip, had also been eliminated yesterday. He had tnen suffered half a dozen losses, yet the quartet was practically identical with tnai which won the national title here four seasons ago. J. Morris (Whitiora) became the second Waikato man to notch six victories, l nis put him on top of section five at Mount Albert, whereas J. S. Anchor (Hamilton) shared the lead with T. E. Hickson.

Another former cnampion in J. H. Mingins (then at Epsom, 1934) w f*s eliminated when the team entered by V. MeGuire, who is playing No. 3 owing to a vacancy in the four, was conquered 23 18 by W. E. Vivian (Mount Eden). The 1931 champion, C. H. de Launay (Carlton), and his successor in 193 A <-». H. Woolley (Auckland) are in prominent places in section three, to-day's play in which is taking place at Balmoral. N A Wells (Mount Eden) vanquished R S. Higginbotham (Ponsonby), 19—14. This made two sixes in section one at Epsom, the other besides Higginbotham being F. Firth (Mount Albert). R E Pilkington (Otahuhu). a son ol R. N. Pilkington (Hamilton), twice New Zealand pairs champion, with H. o. Loveridge, was leader in section four at Mount Eden after the seventh round. The first seven reported was by Edendale green, where J. F. Griffiths (Grey L/vnn) who was Auckland champion in 1939. finished 11 points-up on J. R. London's Carlton rink. At Grev Lvnn. in the seventh round, the side skipped by W. H. Lancaster (who was tourney winner ten years ago), and for which his No. 3 is J. S. Martin, met with another defeat. This made it almost impossible for the Carltonians to qU The y next seven came from Auckland green, where W. J. Short, who led the 1938 Pukekohe side to victory, beat that fine plaver, W. Brennan (Auckland), 17 — 13. To-day's results were:— SECTION I—AT EPSOM Seventh Round.—W. C. Franks (Balmoral) 24, v L. Russell (St. Heller's) 22; P. Firth (Mount Albert) 23. v. J.
