LABOUR NEEDS
ESSENTIAL INDUSTRIES
There is still a big demand in Auckland for labour for essential industries. One of the problems is the staffing of freezing works for the peak killing period, which falls annually between December and February. Although every endeavour has been made by the manpower authorities to release suitable labour from the army, there are still many gaps in the staffs- of works in the Auckland district. Oiie of the most pressing demands is for skilled labour for slaughtering. It is hoped that after the holidays more labour will be available through release of men from the army. More female labour is required for the canneries in the Westfield district. Ah additional problem in connection with Industry in general is that on occasions absenteeism has been unduly high. The labour position in the Auckland wool stores has been Improved by the fact that a number of school teachers, lecturers and students are now available. Under the recent Government order, which made teachers and student* available for seasonal work, a considerable number of men have beeh posted to wool ■tores, and others to a variety of important industries. 1 \
