HAWERA HORSES

SPOT OF BAD LUCK s But for meeting with bad luck, Hawera horses would most probably have added to their score of two firsts, two seconds and a third at the Rangitikei meeting. In the Maiden event Skipper Gay's jockey broke a stirrup leather, putting a wellfancied candidate out of court. Each-way favourite in the Ohakea hack, Corday got on the heels of another horse and fell. He has been on the easy list since as a result of his mishap. Manpower pulled up lame and will have to be spelled for a time. Next racing to interest Hawera trainers are the Otakl and Manawatu fixtures. Clarice, which won so convincingly at Bulls, has been nominated at Otakl and Manawatu. Clarice is now out of hack class, and looks likely to make her presence felt in open company while she retains her present condition. She is a possible contender for the Great Northern Oaks. Valsheen, after Jumping out to lead in the final event at Bulls, was unaccountably allowed to drift back and then finished strongly to be beaten by half a neck. Valsheen Is due to win out of maiden class early and is to race at Otaki next Saturday. War Effort Is standing up to his work in good style and Ls to race at Awapuni on the 19th. Bright Gesture, Duncannon and Duncroon are unlikely to race again until the Taranaki meeting on Boxing Day. Duncannon, which in his last eight starts, had three thirds, two seconds, one win and two unplaced performances, gave himself a nasty cut at Bulls while contesting the Clifton. Handicap, for which race he was favourite. A short let-up may not come amiss to him. The two ex-Aucklanders in O. Cox's stable. Black Renarde and Panoni, are In excellent order, and have been responsible for some smart sprinting trials. They are down to race at Manawatu, and the pair look likely winners during the coming racing.
