MR. H. W. SHOVE MISSING
OTHERS IN CASUALTY LIST
Mr. H. W. Shove, who has been reported missing and believed prisoner, has been overseas commissioner in charge of Y.M.C.A. welfare work for the New Zealand fighting services since early in 1940, and was mentioned in Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg's dispatches a few months ago for his services to the N.Z.E.F.
Mr. Shove was well known in Auckland as a public accountant and for his activities in connection with the Auckland Manufacturers' Association, the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation, and Auckland Chamber of Commerce. He was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, the Auckland University College, and Sydney University. He enlisted in 1918 and spent some months in camp until the Armistice was signed.
Captain Joseph Beesley, of Whang*. rei, who has been reported missing and believed killed in action, was well known in Whangarei business and football circles. He was a member of the Whangarei Rugby Referees' Association, a member of the Druids' Order, and the Whangarei Rotary Club. Before the war he was an officer in the North Auckland Mounted Rifles. He left New Zealand with an early echelon.
Private Sidney Rippon, reported to have died while a prisoner, was a son of Mr. H. H. Rippon, formerly of Mount Maunganui and now of Wellington, and of the late Mis. Rippon. He left with the Third Echelon, and served in Egypt, Greece and Libya.
Private John M. King, reported to have died while a prisoner, was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. M. C. King, of Whangarei. He was born at Devonport, and educated at the Whangarei Primary and High Schools. He was a member of the Whangarei Rowing and Cruising Clubs. Private King served in three campaigns before being taken prisoner.
