MOVING SLOWLY UP
COSTS IN CANADA
UNDUE INFLATION CHECKED OTTAWA. The Dominion Bureau of Statistics cost of living index advance to 117.9 in July, from 116.7 in June and 111.9 in July of last year. This increase will bring a cost-of-living bonus to many employees throughout the Dominion. The index has increased 17 per cent between August, 1939, and July, 1942.
The advance in the index is due mainly to increases in the cost of potatoes, beef, lamb and eggs. The cost of butter, cheese and lard declined moderately. There was a lesser increase in the clothing index from 119.9 to 120. The fuel and lighting index declined from 112.6 to 112.5. Home furnishings and services, rentals and the miscellaneous group remained at about the same level.
Generally speaking, the cost of living in Canada under the measures imposed by the Wartime Prices and Trade Board for the prevention of unnecessary inflation has not, in spite of the war, been heavily increased.
