AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION CLUB AND CHAMPIONSHIP DATES After lengthy discussion, delegates at last night's meeting of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association decided to hold the following tournaments:— Christmas Handicap: December 25, 26 and 27. Championship: For junior and intermediate events only (seniors this year being deleted), January 23, 24, 29, 30 and 31. The Easter hard-court tournament was cancelled owing to insufficient tennis balls being available: The two fixtures agreed on will be held at the Stanley Street courts and special provision was F?*S® . to . r . members ot the forces (including the United Nations) to participate whether affiliated to clubs or not. I Committees to control these tourneys were appointed as follows:—Christmas handicap: Messrs. J. Fernandez, B. J. Baxter, Wright, N. Henderson. Kin*. J. 8. Broun, Parvin, A. Myers, A. C. Johns, J. T. Harrison and C. D. Bowler. Championships: Messrs. A. Ohlson, Fraser. Myers, Broun, McKane, Fernandez, King, Wright, Burgess, Armitage, Harrison and Bowler. The coaching committee advised that the Junior coaching classes would commence for boys and girls under 17 years of age at January 31 at 10 a.m. on November 7, under the guidance of Messrs. Gordon Martin. J. T. Harrison and J. 8. Broun. Last year the scheme proved highly successful. some €0 or 70 yongsters receiving tuition, first in classes by lecture, and then on the courts, the coaches moving round correcting faults. It is expected that even greater interest will be displayed this season. Activity on the Auckland Junior ladder will commence following the closing of nominations on November 9. This is open to those under 18 years of age at September 30 last. Owing to transport difficulties it was decided not to proceed with the outer suburban inter-club competition. Senior ranking matches were suspended for the duration of the war. The open grade competition begins on December *5. Hard-court matches start on Saturday next, when all grades—excepting the top one—would be in action at Windmill Road courts. In this connection the reduced personnel for teams necessitated a special rotation in order to avoid any hold up In play, and for the first, second and third grades this will be:—First, women's singles; second, women's singles; first, combines; second, combines; first, women's doubles, men's doubles; second, women's doubles. For the fourth grade the order will be:—First, women's doubles; first, men's singles; second, women's doubles; second, men's doubles; first, women's singles; first, mixed doubles; second, mixed doubles; third, mixed doubles. It is expected that the women in the teams will have to take a larger share of the umpiring than hitherto. The women's mid-week competition was cancelled. Most grass-court clubs are holding their openings this coming week-end.
