SUPPLY OF MILK
WAIKATO PROGRAMME
QUESTION OP TRANSPORT
If dairymen in districts bevond Papakura are not allowed to come into Auckland with their supplies there will be a shortage of milk in the city. This statement was made by the chairman, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, at last night's meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council, when discussing a suggestion that suppliers of the Karaka, Waiau Pa, Drury, Uunciman and Paerata districts might be, for transport economy reasons, prevented from bringing their supplies in.
The council decided to give its support to the dairymen, who in a petition pointed out that their herds aggregated over 4000 cows, with a productive capacity of 6000 to 8000 gallons a day. In a letter to the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Barclay, the council pointed out that there were 55 permanent dairymen licensed in those districts, milking 2829 cows, as well as 34 temporary milkmen, with winter period licenses, who milked 1450 cows. When all supplies from the districts were in use it totalled over one-quarter of the daily amount used in the council's area.
