AVATERSIDE WORK

With reference to F. H. Patterson h letter in the Star reSardmg "Waterside and Work and .j-"' says, inter alia, that watersiders have to place themselves at the disposal of the stevedore 24 hours a day and seven days a week. 1 he only inference that can be drawn from this statement is that he is always on the job. every day in the week, including Sundays, and wonderful money for overtime. But is he working round the clock 24 hours a day and seven days a week, or does he mean only when the work is available? I could name scores of jobs that are much harder, and no spells except the annual holidays, and no grousing and no strikes either. F . DAY.
