CAULFIELD CUP TRIAL
SKIPTON RETURNS TO FORM
MELBOURNE. October 11,
ii T . ul ?- ita^ ti ? J as res P<>nsible for a brilliant Caulfleld Cup trial by his all-the-way win in the second division of the Melbourne Stakes, one mile, at the Victoria Racing Club s meeting at Flemington yesterday. He showed no signs of weakent'le end> but has yet to prove his a x!l ya' a m " e and a half. Amazed, which was second, made a game effort and enhanced his prospects in the Victoria Derby and the Melbourne Cup. He just beat the improving Distinction. Pandect gave a promising display, but El Golea was disappointing. Great Britain pleased his Derby and Cup admirers by winning the first division of the Melbourne Stakes, but the form was discounted to some extent by the fact that The Trapper and Cacique were the minor place-getters. Velocity was fifth and Tranquil Star registered a fair effort.
Skipton snowed a return to his best form by a brilliant win in the Stand Handicap, one mile and a half. He was fifth to last in the 23 runners five furlongs from home, but finished fast and defeated Hestla in the last stride. Koorenbeen was a fair third. Wilson ran disappointingly.
SIZE OF FIELD
MELBOURNE, October 10. It was announced to-day that the possibility of a big Held In the Caulfield Cup has been considered by the committee of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club. Various suggestions were made, and the committee reluctantly decided that if the acceptances proved too numerous some of the acceptors may be scratched at the committee's decree.
