SERGEANT KILLED
ACCIDENTAL EXPLOSION OFFICER \VOIM>KI> • P.A.) BLENHEIM. Wednesday. A non-commissioned officer was fatally injured and an officer was seriously wounded by an accidental explosion. The victims were:— Sergeant .lames Reginald Pepper, aged 20. killed. His next-of-kin are Mr. and Mrs. R. Pepper. Idris Road, Christchurch. Second-Lieutenant John Graham Cookson. Dunedin, injured. Lieutenant Cookson and Sergeant Pepper were preparing an explosive charge for the purposes of a demonstration to a party of troops. They were alone at the time, and it is not known exactly what happened to cause the explosion. Both men received extensive internal injuries, and Sergeant Pepper died a few hours later. Lieutenant Cookson was removed to the Wairau Hospital. A civil inquest was adjourned after evidence of identification. An Army Board inquiry was held this afternoon.
