DESERT FIGHTING

TWO MORE >IKDALS WON (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Friday. The following New Zealand Expeditionary Force awards are announced:— Distinguished Conduct Medal.— Private Samuel Yates, for distinguished conduct in the Western Desert during the second Libyan campaign in November. Private Yates was mentioned in dispatches (presumably in connection with the same incident) in January while he was en route to New Zealand on a hospital ship as the result of being wounded in the desert on November 28. His next-of-kin is his wife, Mrs. A. Yates, of Kaitaia. He went overseas with the Wellington battalion forming part of the Third Echelon, and served in Greece and later in the desert.

Military Medal.—Driver Oswald Martin, for conspicuous bravery in the Western Desert. His next-of-kin is his mother, Mrs. Lucy Martin, of Pakotai, Whangarei. Driver Martin entered camp in March, 1940, and sailed for the Middle East in December of the same year with the Fourth Reinforcements. He was then in the mechanical Army Service Corps, but was transferred to the reserve mechanical transport. In February of this year he was reported missing and a month later missing, believed prisoner of war, but in April he was reported to be safe with his unit.
