FLYING ACRE

KENTISH UNPLACED

RACING AT PAEROA

The Ohinemuri Jockey Club s meeting was held to-day in fine weather. The attendance was large and the track was in good order.

In the first division of the Taumarunui Stakes, Peter Gregor, always handily placed, stuck on to beat Powys narrowly after the latter had ruined his prospects by running about in the straight. Powys shot to the front at the outset, to lead over the first half-mile from Dart Gold. Hot Pursuit. Tudor Rose and Gratify. He carried on the running across' the top and led into the straight from Yes Tor, Hot Pursuit, Peter Gregor and Gratify. Powys was still in charge half-wav down, hut he bored out and checked Hot Pursuit, Peter Gregor and Yes Tor. Peter Gregor, however, came again and went on to beat Powys by a neck, with Hot Pursuit a length and a half away. Yes Tor was handiest of the others.

Belle Renarde won the second division from end to end, carrying on in the straight to win easily by five lengths. Beginning brilliantly, she opened up an early gap on the field, being followed early by Nordic Song, Exeter, Miss Cardine and Lady Bloater. Miss Cardine ran up second across the top and followed Belle Renarde into the straight, with Exeter, Sir Grant. Nordic Song and Hunting Mac in that order. Nothing had a chance with Belle Renarde at the end and she went on to an ettsy win from Kxeter, with Miss Cardine half a length away. Sir Grant was fourth, followed by Nordic Song and Lady Bloater. I,ady Ex Disappoints Surpeen, which has neen racing well, but without much luck in recent engagements, outstayed the opposition to win the Kopuarahi hurdles rather easily from Prince Pilot. The last-named attempted to lead all the way, and he made a good job of it, but Surpeen's superior condition was too much for him. Surpeen, Cherry Hunter, Valerian and Lady Kx followed Prince Pilot in the early stages, and there was not much between them, and crossing the top Cherry Hunter had moved into second place, followed by Surpeen, Venture, Moko Moko and Lady Kx. Once the straight was reached Surpeen asserted himself to win by two lengths, Prince Pilot beating Venture by half a length, and then came Cherry Hunter, Moko Moko, Lady Kx and Acquest. Lady Kx, a hot 'favourite, jumped -poorly, while Town Survey, another well-backed horse, was always in the ruck. Kentish Beaten Exceptionally heavy backing for Kentish made a great price for the second favourite and winner of the Ngatea Handicap. This was the useful galloper Flying Acre, which came through on the rails once the home stretch was entered, to win with something in reserve by a length and a half. Kentish more or less disgraced himself for one so heavilv backed, as. although he was one of the first to commence, and was fourth when the field settled down, he drifted thereafter, failing to finish in the first seven. Aero King and Phaleron made the early pace from Softly and Kentish, with Elving Acre, Val Lu. Gay Miss, and Chain Acre following, with very little between them. At the home turn Williamson, on Flying Acre, took advantage of an opening to shoot, his horse through and take a winning margin, while Val Lu ran on solidly in the middle of the track to take second place from Hunto. which came very wide round the home turn. Royal Musk ran his usual useful race and finished fourth, iust ahead of Gay Miss, with Marble Fox and Justina handy. Chain Acre, which was on the burly side, ran a nice race to be eighth, and should soon get on the winning list. Foxlore was never sighted. Detailed results:- — TAIMARI'NI'I STAKES of £230.
