YANKEES ONE IP ON CARDINALS A cablegram from New York states that on Wednesday, in the opening contest. of the world series of baseball contests, played at St. Louis, the New York Yankees beat St. Louis Cardinals, 7—4. The winning pitcher, Ruffing, was easily superior to Cooper. The Sydney Morning Herald of September 29 stated that every member of the U.S.A. Services in Australia would be given the opportunity of listening to a ball-to-ball description of the world's baseball series. The games would be between the New York Yankees, representing the American Baseball League, and St. Louis Cardinals, of the National League. They are to be playea alternately at St. Louis and New York. To win the series a club must gain four wins of seven games. The U.S. Office of War Information arranged * 45-minute description by short-wave from San Francisco. It will be relayed simultaneously through 14 commercial stations throughout Australia. To ensure that men on duty in camp, those in hospital or absent at the time of the broadcast may have the benefit of the description, records are to be Immediately made. These will be rushed to all centres, and the Army transport section will dispatch records by army aeroplanes to distant camps. By these methods it is claimed that every member of the services will be able to listen to the games, which command tremendous interest amongst Americans.
