SWEDISH FOOD SHIPS
Service To Greece Proceeding Without Interruption WHEAT FROM CANADA British Official Wireless Rec. 1.30 p.m. RUGBY, Sept. 29. The service of Swedish ships, carrying food to Greece, is stated by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Warfare, Mr. Dingle Foot, to be proceeding without interruption. The first Of the three ships which arrived at Piraeus at the end of August left on September 23 for Canada. Two more arrived at Piraeus on September 18, and the last three ships in this service would leave Montreal shortly. The ships carried the Red Cross and Swedish markings and were fully illuminated at night.
In answer to a question, Mr. Foot said that while the exact statistics were not obtainable, there could be no doubt that an abominably high death rate prevailed among Greek children. This was partly due to the scarcity of milk and fats, both of which were requisitioned or otherwise acquired on a considerable scale by the occupying authorities. The Government could not undertake to make good all the depredations of the Axis Powers.
The Swedish scheme for the importation and distribution of wheat from Canada had been in operation for only a short time and he could hot give any fresh undertakings for the future until the results of these experiments were known. He understood that supplies of milk were not yet available from South America and the Department had not been asked to grant navicerts for this.
