LONG QUEUES
RAILWAY STAFF BUSY ISSUE OF TRAVEL PERMITS Officials of the Auckland railwav station advise that seats on the Wellington trains are exceptionally heavily hooked. The cancellation of the Limited express owing to the coal shortage has forced all travellers to book their seats on the afternoon expresses and as a result there are no sleeping berths or first-class seats available until Friday of next week. At present second-class seats are available for trains on and after Wednesday next. Approximately 18.000 travelling permits have been applied for, of which approximately 15.000 have been issued. The two permit officers are working under very heavy pressure, and reported that on one day at least the queue was formed from 9 a.m. until 5.40 p.m. As they are able as a rule to deal with three ppople every two minutes an idea niav be gained of the size of the queue and the strain of their work.
